Watching series in their original language has definitely become the latest trend, but have you noticed the variety of English accents you may stumble upon?

When you find yourself struggling to understand the «English» spoken in a particular series, just check what country it is from, or even what country a certain actor or actress is from.

Watching a scene from «Outlander» and not understanding one single word is perfectly normal, as they often speak Scottish English, a dialect or set of dialects of the English language spoken in Scotland. So don´t panic, relax and enjoy the plot.

If it is really necessary, just start with American English series, like «This is us», with subtitles in your mother tongue if you must. For those of you who already have a certain level, add English subtitles, as this will be a quicker way to improve both your listening and reading skills.

Never forget that every country has a whole range of accents depending on the area people are from. Imagine a series with Andalusian actors compared with actors from Madrid, for instance. People learning Spanish might struggle with the Andalusian accents, and this is absolutely normal. Just as in Canada they speak French, but even with a certain level you might not understand a movie in Canadian French ;-).

Just accept this as part of the learning process and you will do just fine… But never forget to have fun!
